Families with Special Needs don’t need to miss out on local family fun! We’ve rounded up this month’s events for families and children with special needs. Unless otherwise stated, all events require preregistration. See the event listings for more information and to register.

October Events for Children with Special Needs

Weekly Events:

Open Play
Every Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
GiGi’s Playhouse, 5404 W. Elm Street, McHenry
Families and their friends are invited to the playhouse for playtime. Open play helps promote positive beginnings for new families with a child with Down syndrome, creates awareness opportunities for peers and friends, and provides support and networking for families. Come ready for fun and a crazy good time! Open to families with children of all ages and their friends.

Creative Connections
Mondays, 1 & 8 October 10:00 – 10:45 a.m.

Algonquin Area Public Library, 2600 Harnish Dr., Algonquin | (847) 458-6060
A storytime for children ages 0-5 to make connections with their caregivers, other children, and literacy. Run by a speech therapist from Elgin Pediatric Therapy, this group is designed for children currently receiving therapy services or those who may benefit from therapeutic play, yet children with all abilities are welcome.

Single Day Events

Sensory Story Time
10 October 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Barrington Area Library, 505 N. Northwest Highway, Barrington | (847) 382-1300
All ages are welcome with a caregiver. Children enjoy books, music, and movement activities designed to engage the senses and build language and literacy skills. For children of all abilities in the Program Room. Registration required.

Kids Club
13 October, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
GiGi’s Playhouse, 5404 W. Elm Street, McHenry
This program is designed to support the development of social skills and language through peer-to-peer interaction in a casual and fun setting! Kids Club supports gross motor skills through active games, fine motor, and self- help skills through meal/snack preparation and activities. Our Kids Club program is recommended for children ages 8 to 12.

ASL Halloween Storytime
13 October, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Barnes & Noble, Bohl Farm Marketplace, 5280 Route 14, Crystal Lake
The McLakes Chapter of the Illinois Association of the Deaf presents an ASL Halloween story time!

Sensory Storytime *RR*
13 October, 1:30 – 2:15 p.m.
Crystal Lake Public Library, 126 Paddock Street, Crystal Lake
Story time for children with special needs includes movement, music, stories, and hands-on activities.  Siblings are welcome and registration is required.

Perspective Play
20 October, 10:00 – 10:45 a.m.
Algonquin Area Public Library, 2600 Harnish Dr., Algonquin | (847)458-6060
Move, groove, communicate, and interact. Lead by Preston Brown from Behavioral Perspective, this program is designed for children with autism and others who may benefit from these interactions. All abilities are welcome.

Trunk or Treat
25 October 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Mobile Therapy Centers of America, 1870 W. Winchester Road Libertyville,
Special Halloween event with games and candy designed for the needs of children with ASD. This event will be held in the parking lot in front of Mobile Therapy Centers.

 

LMNOP
27 October, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
GiGi’s Playhouse, 5404 W. Elm Street, McHenry
Language Music N’ Our Peeps LMNOP is an interactive and engaging program designed to guide parents and young children through learning basic sign language and other forms of communication using music and language based activities. LMNOP is recommended for ages newborn-36 months. We have a fun new theme each month!

Lambs Farm Informational Tours
31 October ,10:00 a.m. -12:00 pm
Lambs Farm , 14245 W Rockland Rd, Libertyville
In addition to residential programs, Lambs Farm offers vocational, recreational, and life enrichment programs. Be advised there is a significant amount of walking in this tour. Tour is free but registration is required.
