Special Fun for Special Needs

The McHenry County Special Needs Calendar is sponsored by Pediatric Interactions and Therapeutic Links offering services together and individually in Speech, Occupational and developmental therapies in Lake and McHenry Counties.

We’ve rounded up this month’s events for families and children with special needs. Unless otherwise stated, all events require pre-registration. See the event listings for more information and to register.

Open Play
Every Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
GiGi’s Playhouse, 5404 W. Elm St., McHenry
Families and their friends are invited to the playhouse for playtime. Open play helps promote positive beginnings for new families with a child with Down syndrome, creates awareness opportunities for peers and friends, and provides support and networking for families. Come ready for fun and a crazy good time! Open to families with children of all ages and their friends.

Special Events for Children with Special Needs

ADHD & Sensory Workshop for Parents
1 August, 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. & 7 August,9:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Dukes Alehouse and Kitchen, 110 North Main St., Crystal Lake
Maybe your child has been given a label of ADHD, ASD, SPD or maybe you just know in your gut there’s more going on with your child than other’s realize… it’s time to attend the Perfect Storm. Join Dr. Tony Ebel (Nationally Recognized Pediatric Wellness Expert) & Team at the Perfect Storm to learn more! Event is free to attend but registration is required. It will include food and drink, a presentation and a Q&A session.  FREE Registration required.

Teen Tastic
2 August 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
GiGi’s Playhouse, 5404 W. Elm Street, McHenry | (815) 385-7529 
Focuses on building social skills with friends without Down syndrome by participating in team-based activities in a casual and fun setting. 
Recommended for ages 13 -17 years old.

Helping us Grow” Early Childhood Info & Free Screenings
6 August, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
McHenry Public Library District, 809 Front St., McHenry
Reps from the Helping Us Grow (HUG) Program, offered by Options & Advocacy for McHenry County, will be here to provide free developmental screenings for kids 0-3, fun games and activities, handouts on challenging childhood milestones (potty training, sleep, feeding, tantrums, etc.) as well as information on the available community resources offered by Options & Advocacy, which include Parent Support Services, Early Intervention, Playgroups, and the Autism Resource Center.

AMC Sensory Friendly Films 
10 & 24, August, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
AMC Theatres in Lake in the Hills and South Barrington
AMC is proud to partner with the Autism Society to offer unique movie showings where the theaters turn the lights up and turn the sound down, so you can get up and dance, walk, shout or sing! 

Kids Club
10 August, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
GiGi’s Playhouse, 5404 W. Elm St., McHenry
This program is designed to support the development of social skills and language through peer to peer interaction in a casual and fun setting! Kids Club supports gross motor skills through active games, fine motor, and self- help skills through meal/snack preparation and activities. Our Kids Club program is recommended for 8—12 year olds

This storytime, designed for children with special needs, features movement, music, stories, and hands-on activities. Siblings are welcome. Registration required.

Sensory Saturday: Apples*registration required*
17 August, 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.

A sensory event designed for children with disabilities, their families, and friends! Enjoy the apple picking sensory bin, apple sensory bottles, apple pretend play, make puffy paint caramel apples and a DIY apple bird feeder! Each registered child will receive an apple sensory bag to take home!

Alexander Leigh Center for Autism Open House
20 August 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Alexander Leigh Center for Autism, 4100 Veterans Parkway, McHenry
Everyone is welcome! Mix and mingle, take a tour, and learn about who ALCA is and what they do. Brin an expo brand of dry erase markers to be entered in a raffle.

LMNOP
24 August, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
GiGi’s Playhouse, 5404 W. Elm St., McHenry
Language Music N’ Our Peeps LMNOP is an interactive and engaging program designed to guide parents and young children through learning basic sign language and other forms of communication using music and language based activities. LMNOP is recommended for ages Newborn-36 months. Fun new theme each month!

Sensory Storytime *registration required*
28 August, 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. 
Barrington Area Library, 505 N. Northwest Hwy, Barrington
Children enjoy books, music, and movement activities designed to engage the senses and build language and literacy skills. For children of all abilities. Program Room. Register.
