June McHenry County Special Needs Calendar

The McHenry County Special Needs Calendar is sponsored by Pediatric Interactions and Therapeutic Links offering services together and individually in Speech, Occupational and developmental therapies in Lake and McHenry Counties.

Families that have a child with special needs don’t need to miss out on regular fun and open play. The McHenry County Special Needs Calendar rounds up this month’s events for families and children with special needs all in one place. Unless otherwise stated, all events require preregistration. Weekly Events for Children with Special Needs:

Open Play
Every Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
GiGi’s Playhouse, 5404 W. Elm Street, McHenry | (815) 385-7529
Families and their friends are invited to the playhouse for playtime. Open play helps promote positive beginnings for new families with a child with Down syndrome, creates awareness opportunities for peers and friends, and provides support and networking for families. Come ready for fun and a crazy good time! Open to families with children of all ages and their friends.

A pre-preschool alternative or addition to an early preschool class providing a supportive environment for a child’s first time away from parents in a structured program. The group includes implementation of individualized supports, facilitated by a speech/language pathologist and developmental therapists. For children ages 2-3, $35 per day.

Special Events for Children with Special Needs:

Connections Storytime
3 June 10:00 – 10:45 a.m.

A storytime for children to make connections with their caregivers, other children, and literacy. Designed for the inclusion of children with developmental delays. All abilities are welcome. For ages 0-5 with parent/caregiver.

Teen Tastic
7 June 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
GiGi’s Playhouse, 5404 W. Elm Street, McHenry | (815) 385-7529 
Focuses on building social skills with friends without Down syndrome by participating in team-based activities in a casual and fun setting. 
Recommended for ages 13 -17 years old.

AMC Sensory Friendly Films 
8 & 22 June 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
AMC Theatres in Lake in the Hills and South Barrington
AMC is proud to partner with the Autism Society to offer unique movie showings where the theaters turn the lights up and turn the sound down, so you can get up and dance, walk, shout or sing! 

Kids Club
8 June,  10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

This program is designed to support the development of social skills and language through peer to peer interaction in a casual and fun setting! Kids Club supports gross motor skills through active games, fine motor, and self- help skills through meal/snack preparation and activities. The Kids Club program is recommended for 8—12-year-olds.

Sensory Storytime *RR*

This storytime, designed for children with special needs, features movement, music, stories, and hands-on activities. Siblings are welcome. Registration required.

Autism Awareness Day
15 June
Six Flags Great America, Gurnee
In partnership with Autism Speaks Great America will offer quiet area throughout the park. In addition, there will be a special picnic event. Admission is $40 for just the park and $60 for entrance and picnic. Use code AUTISM when purchasing tickets.

Outdoors is for Everyone

Participants with disabilities are invited to experience nature-themed sensory stations and join leader-led activities. There will be up to ten different stations to choose from.  Meet at the Northern Woods picnic area on the playground side.

LMNOP is an interactive and engaging program designed to guide parents and young children through learning basic sign language and other forms of communication using music and language-based activities.  LMNOP is recommended for ages Newborn-36 months.

Move, groove, communicate and interact. Lead by Preston Brown from Behavioral Perspective, this program is designed for children with autism and others who may benefit from these interactions. All abilities are welcome. For children between the ages of 3 and 7.
