29 October STEM Me a Story: “Room on the Broom”

After reading Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson, we will see how many characters we can balance on the broom! The first 25 kids, in Kindergarten through 3rd grade, that register will be able to pick up a kit to complete the activities through curbside or in-library pick-up. Staff will contact those registered a week prior to the event to provide pick up details.

Join Crystal Lake Public Library’s teen librarian, Karin, for some tips and tricks on decorating a festive Halloween pumpkin!

22 October Tween Time

Hosted by the Marengo Union Library District. Ages 9-11. Registration Required. Everyone will ooh and aah over your popsicle stick Haunted House. Pick up your craft kit starting the day of the program.

23 October 7:00 p.m. Pumpkin Carving and Trivia Tournament
In-Person – Registration Required
{Crystal Lake} Join BREAK – Crystal Lake Teen Center, for (socially-distanced) Pumpkin Carving! Register to reserve your pumpkin, or bring your own (limit: 10 sign-ups for free pumpkins)! Trivia Murder Part 1 + 2 tournament to follow right after the carving!

24 October 2-4:00 p.m. Halloween Hijinks Party
Virtual – Registration Required
Hosted by the Algonquin Area Public Library District. Grab a pumpkin and join us live for a virtual pumpkin carving and decorating Halloween celebration. Other activities include scary story readings, Halloween and horror trivia, costume contest, and prizes! 

30 October 7:00 p.m. Almost Full Moon Hike
In-Person – Registration Required – Free
Crabtree Nature Center, Barrington Hills. Hike a trail under an almost full moon on Halloween Eve. Choose 1.4 miles or 2.0 miles. All participants are required to wear a mask and practice physical distancing.

{Crystal Lake} Costume contest, horror trivia (with prizes!), dinner, and a horror movie! The festivities start at 7:00! BREAK – Crystal Lake Teen Center is also open till midnight, so please make driving arrangements beforehand!

Best Halloween House Displays

Halloween Town
821 Hartley Dr., Algonquin
This interactive haunted outdoor display is located in Algonquin during the month of October. Halloween Town was first created in 2006 by homeowner Jim Haupert, starting with a tiny graveyard and a few skeleton lights. Kids enjoyed the display while parents would photograph them in the graveyard on Halloween night. Every year the display has grown larger with lights, fog, and ghouls. The display is visible during daytime hours, but the full effects are only visible at night.

Halloween Movies in McHenry County

24 & 31 October 1:00. 4:00, and 7:00 p.m. Hitchcock movie Marathon
In-Person – Registration Required
{Woodstock} 50 tickets will be available for each show. October 24 they are showing The Birds and October 31 is Rear Window. Tickets are $7 per person.

29 October 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Drive-In Hocus Pocus
FREE – In-Person – Registration Required – Outdoors
{Algonquin} Algonquin Recreation is excited to host a Drive-In Movie. Grab the family, get out of your house and join us from the comfort of your car to watch Hocus Pocus on a 45-foot screen! Pre-packed goodie bags will be
handed out upon arrival/check-in. Children are welcome to dress in costume to celebrate Halloween. This event is free, however, space is limited and preregistration is required to reserve your spot. On-site registration will not be accepted on the day of the event. Registration is currently open to all Algonquin residents with non-resident registration opening on October 22.

30 October 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. Outdoor Halloween Movie: Labyrinth
Free – Registration Required – In-Person
{Algonquin} Grab your lawn chairs, blankets, and masks to join as we watch Labyrinth on a big screen at the Library parking lot. We’ll be sitting in properly socially distanced groups. In case of inclement weather, the program will be canceled.  Please check with the Library for updates. The movie will start at dusk.

Sign up to get one of Crystal Lake Public Libraries’ new Take-and-Make Crafts!  Register for the event and then you will receive an email with instructions for pick-up. 

19 – 30 October By Appointment Tiny Pumpkin Kits

In partnership with the Village of Fox Lake, the Fox Lake District Library is giving out mini pumpkin painting craft kits. Each kit will include a tiny pumpkin and three acrylic paint colors. First come first serve, as supplies last.

22 October Simple Sewing: Monster Plush

23 October 6-9:00 p.m. Halloween Fun Night
In-Person – Registration Required
{Huntley} Drop the kids off and enjoy a night to yourselves! We’ll pack this Halloween-themed night with games, prizes, music, costume contests, and a craft! Pizza and drink meal included. For children ages 8-10, $14 per resident child and $18 non-resident child.

26 October 1-1:30 p.m. Maker Academy: Monster Cupcakes
Virtual
Create yummy edible monster treats. Ms. Jamie from the Crystal Lake Public Library will show you how to make some monster cupcakes and then you can give it a try! 

27 October 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. Halloween Gore-tastic Lab Hour
Virtual – Registration Required – Activity Kit
Investigate what makes Halloween so chilling in this electrifying science workshop. Have fun with weird and horrifying Halloween concepts like puking pumpkins, static powered witches, horrific Halloween pranks, blood and bruises, the science of a haunted fall carnival, creepy candy experiments, and more ghoulish Halloween exploration! Kids will have such a blast; they won’t even realize they are acquiring new science concepts! Themed souvenirs included. Hosted by the Barrington Park District, $35 for residents $43 for non-residents.

30 October 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Spooktacular Flashlight Hunt
In-Person – Registration Required
{Lake in the Hills} The Halloween Bunny will fill the Sunset Park soccer fields with candy-filled glowing eggs for the older kids that don’t get to participate in our spring egg hunt. Some fun “insta” worthy photo ops will be set up for you and your besties to document the fun. Grab your friends, a flashlight, and a basket when you head over to Sunset Park! Costumes are welcomed… we might even have a prize for the best one! For children ages 9-13, fee is $3 per child.

30 October 6-9:00 p.m. Halloween Fun Night
In-Person – Registration Required
