Whether your kids are the haunted house and scary movie-loving tweens, or preschoolers who would prefer a not-so-scary storytime at the local library, or school-age kids who enjoy something in between, McHenry County has something for the whole family to enjoy.

{Fox Lake} The event will have various artisan food vendors and pumpkin carving. At the end of the event, they will light the pumpkins and place them on our pumpkin wall.  $2 fee for carving, admission is free.

{Huntley} Join the Huntley Park District this fall for an evening of indoor games, prizes, costume contests, and outdoor hayrides! Activities range from 25 cents – 1 dollar. Cash only. Recommended for ages 12 and younger.

{Huntley} There is something for everyone including pumpkins, corn stalks & Indian corn for purchase! Event includes food tents, family costume parade around the square, free hayrides, free family games and crafts, entertainment, and trick-or-treating.

23 October 9:30 a.m. “Not So Haunted” Hayride
Registration Required
{Huntley} A unique hayride experience through Deicke Park for Preschool-Aged Children. The trip will include a stop at a pumpkin patch and conclude with arts & crafts and a special storytime with the “Good Witch”. For children ages 2-5 with a caregiver, pre-registration required. The fee is $10 per resident child and $15 per non-resident child.

{Crystal Lake} A frighteningly fun-filled event for the whole family. The event will include a costume contest, games and activities, fortune-telling, bounce obstacle house, and more.

{McHenry} A unique Halloween Party for ages 3 and older. Each child will receive a mini pumpkin to decorate as well as Halloween and Pumpkin activity stations and games. Party snacks and drinks will be available. Registration required fee is $8 per child adults are free.

26 October All Day Halloween Party

{Richmond} There will be a spooky storytime at 10:30 a.m. and crafts, games, and activities all day long. Dress up in your Halloween costume and join the fun!

26 & 27 All Day – Pumpkin Train
{Union} Pick up your pumpkin by train and enjoy some family-themed Halloween fun. Kids are encouraged to come in costume for a special treat! Admission is $15 per adult and $11 per child.

{McHenry} Trick-or-Treat through the Jaycee Haunted House in an un-haunted way! This year the rooms will be open, visually, and lights will be left on. Kids are encouraged to dress up. Cost is $5 per child save $1 off with canned food items. Two adults are admitted free with each child.

Halloween Events for Tweens & Teens

{Harvard} Bring your after school snack and watch movies to get ready for Halloween. We’ll have a movie showing every Thursday in October. These movie screenings are open ONLY to youth in grades 6-12.

11, 12, 18 & 19 October 7:00 p.m. Haunted Hayride
{McHenry} $8 per person, a portion of the proceeds are donated to a local food pantry. Mid-October is when Henry Deadwood emerges on Peterson Park in McHenry. To him, this place is known as ‘Deadwood Forest’ where he and his gangling group of relatives and misfits entertain spirits, ghosts, and goblins. Embark on this haunted hayride and you too can get a glimpse of this terrifying group.

11 October 3:30 p.m. Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai
Registration Required FREE INDOORS
{Algonquin} Celebrate Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, a “gathering of one hundred supernatural tales,” a tradition of sharing spooky stories! Piza will be served. For teens only.

12 October 5:00 p.m. Ghost Stories Plus
Registration Required
{Ingelside} Travel the Volo Bog Hunted trail, if you dare! Then gather in the cold, dark, picnic area to hear some chilling tales. This year they welcome storyteller Anne Shimojima who will share stories from the U.S., Europe, and her native Japan. Ages 5 through adult are welcome for the first set of stories; 10 and older for the second scarier set. Registration required, the event usually sells out. Cost is $6 per adult and $4 per child.

Haunted Houses in McHenry County

{Barrington and Hampshire} Free with standard farmyard admission, take a walk through our haunted house and experience the twist and turns, be ready for some thrills and chills. (Appropriate for school-aged children.)

INDOORS
{McHenry} In Rotter’s Manor where the strange and unusual reside. No one really knows what drew the entities to stay here, but they love this house and now call it home. We are asking for strong Paranormal investigators (that’s you) to come discover what drew the spirits here. Can you help us take back the Manor? Tickets are $12 per person, $11 with a  canned food item! 

Best Halloween House Displays

Halloween Town
821 Hartley Dr., Algonquin
This interactive haunted outdoor display is located in Algonquin during the month of October. Halloween Town was first created in 2006 by homeowner Jim Haupert, starting with a tiny graveyard and a few skeleton lights. Kids enjoyed the display while parents would photograph them in the graveyard on Halloween night. Every year the display has grown larger with lights, fog, and ghouls. The display is visible during daytime hours, but the full effects are only visible at night.

Nonetheless, this quirky family has to deal with many of the same challenges faced by any other family, none more frightening than this…Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up.
