Halloween isn’t just about trick-or-treating. There is an entire month’s worth of family friendly events happening in McHenry County to get everyone into the spooky spirit. Whether your kids are haunted house and scary movie-loving tweens, or preschoolers who would prefer a not-so-scary story time at the local library, or school age kids who enjoy something in between, McHenry County has something for the whole family to enjoy.

10 October 7:00 p.m.  – Historic Halloween
 {McHenry} And audience members will enhance the spellbinding experience by becoming part of a sound-effects chorus! Admission is $8 for McHenry County Historical Society members, $10 for nonmembers.

13 October 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. – Cosplay Contest
FREE {Cary}  Join the library in their first ever cosplay contest! Participants of all ages are welcome. The contest will have four age groups: Pre-K, Elementary, Teen, and Adult. Winners will receive a prize and be chosen by audience vote. Event includes other activities and refreshments.

13 October 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Pumpkin Jubilee
FREE
{Fox Lake} Event will feature various artisan food vendors, craft vendors, and pumpkin carving ($2). Admission is free.

20 & 21  All Day – Pumpkin Train
{Union} Pick up your pumpkin by train and enjoy some family-themed Halloween fun. Kids are encouraged to come in costume for a special treat! Admission is: $15 per adult and $11 per child.

20 October 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Halloween Fun Night
{Huntley} Join the Huntley Park District this fall for an evening of indoor games, prizes, costume contests, and outdoor hayrides! Activities range from 25 cents – 1 dollar. Cash only. Recommended for ages 12 and younger.

FREE {Huntley} There is something for everyone including pumpkins, corn stalks & Indian corn for purchase! Event includes food tents, family costume parade around the square, free hayrides, free family games and crafts, entertainment, and trick-or-treating.

23 & 24 October 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Music & Movement Halloween
FREE  {Algonquin} Dress up in your costume and enjoy a fun half hour full of singing and dancing. A few giveaways will be handed out after storytime.

25 October, 10:00 a.m.- Preschool Halloween Costume Party
FREE  {Fox Lake} Registration required. Dress up in your Halloween Costumes for this spooktacular storytime with songs, games, and a yummy treat.

25 October, 4:00 p.m. .- Spooky Matinee
FREE  {Marengo} All ages welcome! We’ll be showing the 2018 family feature film “Hotel Transylvania 3” (97 minutes, rated PG, Columbia Pictures Industries) Beverages and snack will be provided. Please register all those who will be attending.

26 October, 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Halloween Bash
{Algonquin} $10 (R) / $20 (NR) Registration required. Join us in your costumes as we have a Halloween Bash.  Your little ones will enjoy fun crafts, silly songs, stories, and even get to decorate cookies as we celebrate Halloween.

26 October 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Halloween at the Y!
FREE {Crystal Lake} A frighteningly fun filled event for the whole family. Event will include a live broadcast from STAR 105.5 McHenry County, costume contest, games and activities, fortune telling, bounce obstacle house, and more.

26 October, 6:30 p.m. – Halloween BINGO
FREE {Fox River Grove} Registration required. Families are invited to this creepy night full of tricks and treats for all ages. We’ll play ten ghoulishly fun games. Register early, as this program fills up fast!

27 October All Day Halloween Party

{Richmond} There will be a spooky storytime at 10:30 a.m. and crafts, games, and activities all day long. Dress up in your Halloween costume and join the fun!

27 October 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. 8th Annual Party in the Plaza
FREE {Crystal Lake} Event includes face painting, petting zoo, touch-a-truck, trick-or-treating, pumpkin painting, and more. Costumes are encouraged, but not necessary.

27 October 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. Halloween Costume Party
FREE  {Algonquin} Come in costumes, make slime, decorate pumpkins, and load up on candy. Celebrate Halloween, Best Brains, style!

27 October – 1:20 p.m.  Algonquin Howl-O-Ween Dog Parade
{Algonquin} $5 per entry. Halloween has gone to the dogs at Algonquin’s eighth annual Howl-O-Ween Dog Parade! Owners and their dogs are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite costumes as we parade down the street from Ganek Municipal Center to High Hill Park.

27 October, 3:30 p.m. Halloween Hayride with Dream Riders
FREE {Crystal Lake} Registration required. Put on your costume and join us for some friendly frights at this Halloween themed storytime followed by a hayride, tour, and time to meet the horses of Dream Riders. CLPL cardholders only. Please register. (Limit 12 children)

27 October, 10:00 a.m. Halloween Spooktacular
{Barrington} $12/$14 Pre-registration required. (Adults free with paid child admission) For children ages 1 through 11, we’ll have activities such as games, music, inflatables, cookie decorating balloon animals, hayrides, and mini golf.

27 October 1:00 p.m. Sunburst Pageant and Costume Contest
{Barrington} Cost: $50 minimum entry fee. Join Sunburst Pageant at the Ice House Mall for a pageant and costume contest for children and adults ages newborn – 27.

27 October, 10:00 a.m. – Not Too Scary Ghost Stories for the Whole Family
{Woodstock} $10 all seats. Jim May tells and writes stories for all ages.  Come hear many funny (and a bit scary), ghostly adventures of the Boo Baby Girl and her sidekick, Bootsie, the Bilingual Cattle-Herding Chihuahua in a sneak preview of his new chapter book: The Further Adventures of the Boo Baby Girl.

27 October, All Day – Halloween Comic Fest|

Halloween Events for Tweens & Teens

13 & 20 7:00 – 10:30 p.m. Haunted Hayride
{McHenry} $8 per person, a portion of the proceeds are donated to a local food pantry. Mid-October is when Henry Deadwood emerges on Peterson Park in McHenry. To him, this place is known as ‘Deadwood Forest’ where he and his gangling group of relatives and misfits entertain spirits, ghosts, and goblins. Embark on this haunted hayride and you too can get a glimpse of this terrifying group.

20 October 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Teen Crafternoon

{Huntley} Learn hand-sewing techniques to make spooky things. Materials will be provided (or you can bring your own).  For grades 6-12.

20 October, 5:00 p.m. Dare to Scare Halloween Wagon Ride & Bonfire
{Crystal Lake} $15 per person, registration required. Grab your friends and head over to Sterne’s Woods for a night that is sure to spook you! Enjoy pumpkin painting, a haunting wagon ride through the woods, and scary stories around the campfire. Hot dogs & s’mores provided.

27 October 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Meet & Greet with Svengoolie
{Volo} Svengoolie returns once again to the Volo Auto Museum for meeting and greeting with museum guests. Guests to the museum will have the chance to pose for a picture with Svengoolie and get an autograph at no extra charge. His appearance will be from 12 – 2.

24 October 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. Pet Ghost in Jar
FREE  {Algonquin} Conjure a ghost out of thin air (aka craft supplies) and keep them as a “pet” in a jar year-round!

{Crystal Lake} $1 Admission with costume, $4 rental. Event will feature a costume contest and mummy wrapping contest with cash prizes! We build a mini haunted maze that’s kid friendly! We create a great photo backdrop for pictures. Spooky music, races, 4-corners, and other great specials.

Haunted Houses in McHenry County

The scariest abodes in the county, visit them before they disappear!

1 September – 31 October 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. daily Goebbert’s Pumpkin Patch
{Barrington and Hampshire} Free with standard farmyard admission, take a walk through our haunted house and experience the twist and turns, be ready for some thrills and chills. (Appropriate for school-aged children.)

Best Halloween House Displays

October,  Halloween Town
821 Hartley Dr., Algonquin
This interactive haunted outdoor display is located in Algonquin during the month of October. Halloween Town was first created in 2006 by homeowner Jim Haupert, starting with a tiny graveyard and a few skeleton lights. Kids enjoyed the display while parents would photograph them in the graveyard on Halloween night. Every year the display has grown larger with lights, fog, and ghouls. The display is visable during daytime hours, but the full effects are only visible at night.
