After a weekend of steals and deals, it’s time to come together as a community and help some local nonprofits as they try to close out their years on a high note. According to the National Center for Charitable Giving,
“Giving by individuals makes up the vast majority of contributions received by nonprofit organizations.” Individual giving accounted for 72 percent of all charitable contributions received by nonprofits in 2014.
That’s you, and me, and everyone on your block. By coming together on Giving Tuesday our gifts, no matter how small, can make a huge impact on our community, our county, and our Nation.
Just like a dollar spent at a local business goes farther a donation to a locally based charity also goes even further than one to a national or international charity. As you enjoy your snow day and plan out your end of year giving, please consider helping these McHenry County charities.
All charities listed are located in Lake or McHenry County and are doing work for families and children in our own counties.

Partners for Progress – Wauconda
Partners for Progress Mission is to provide alternative equine therapeutic programs to individuals with physical, mental and emotional challenges. By using quality trained horses, each individual participant rider will have a chance to experience the highest quality therapeutic ride with maximum benefits.
Giving Tuesday Goal: Your kindness will give hope to a child-like Olivia. “Partners for Progress provides state of the art interventions for children with physical, cognitive and emotional disabilities using wonderful therapeutic horses as the tool. My daughter Olivia has been riding for 12 years (and) has made incredible progress in many areas. I do not believe she would be walking if it wasn’t for this therapy. We are blessed beyond belief to have found the talented staff who work in this program.” – – Olivia’s Mom
Children with special needs have incredible abilities, a great deal to give, and the desire to contribute, but, they need help to reach their dreams – your help. Your partnership helps to keep the doors of hope open for these children, changing the future of your community and the quality of life for those like Olivia.Back to Top
Antioch Traveling Closet – Antioch
Antioch Traveling Closet’s Mission is to ensure that all children, adults, and or senior citizens have basic items that most of us take for granted. For example, ATC provides individuals, with items as simple as, a toothbrush and toothpaste. The ATC amasses donated items from the community such as new or very gently used clothing, shoes, clothing, winter jackets, and toiletries. In addition, ATC collects school materials and cleaning supplies for the home. Collected items are then distributed, free of charge, at quarterly giveaway drives. On a first come first served basis, the residents of our community can come and shop for whatever items they are in need of, FREE OF CHARGE. Several local hairstylists also provide free haircuts.
ATC also provides clothing, toiletries, and sometimes food to families that become suddenly homeless in the area or on an as-needed basis. Area schools will contact the ATC for clothing/winter wear and shoes for students many times throughout the year.
Giving Tuesday Goal: To be able to give each person socks, hats, gloves, and toiletries at our December giveaway.Back to Top
