Give Local – Giving Tuesday Guide

After a weekend of steals and deals it’s time to come together  as a community and help some local nonprofits as they try to close out their years on a high note. According to the National Center for Charitable Giving,

Giving by individuals makes up the vast majority of contributions received by nonprofit organizations.” Individual giving accounted for 72 percent of all charitable contributions received by nonprofits in 2014.

That’s you, and me, and everyone on your block. By coming together on Giving Tuesday our gifts, no matter how small, can make a huge impact on our community, our county, and our Nation.

Just like a dollar spent at a local business goes farther a donation to a locally based charity also goes even further than one to a national or international charity. As you enjoy your snow day and plan out your end of year giving, please consider helping these local charities.

All charities listed are located in Lake or McHenry County and are doing work for families and children in our own counties.

Mission: Busy Brains Children’s Museum is a non-profit corporation founded by two educators and parents that noticed a NEED for PLAY in the northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin area. Our beautiful building needs renovation before we can open our permanent space and become the FIRST children’s museum in Lake County.

Giving Tuesday Goal: Busy Brains is looking for PIONEERS of PLAY: local families and businesses that understand that children learn best when they are freely experiencing their world. Pioneers look forward, with a strong vision, and work hard to reach their goals. Busy Brains Pioneers agree to contribute monthly, so that the museum can make continuous progress throughout 2019. Sign up online to make a monthly pledge! A pledge of $5 a month will earn you a BBCM t-shirt and fantastic gear set to share with a child in your life.

Mission: Fox and Trove is on a mission to empower kids to be world changers by teaching them how to be kind, brave and resilient! Their kindness education program includes summer kindness camps, school kindness curriculum and an after-school program and is based on over 20 years of research on social-emotional learning during the early formative years of 3 – 6.

Giving Tuesday Goal: 100% of sales and donations on Giving Tuesday will go to making our kindness curriculum available online so that it’s free to every school. The skills we teach – empathy, conflict resolution, emotion regulation, self-calming, resilience, bravery, inclusiveness, and kindness, have been proven to decrease childhood depression, anxiety and bullying and significantly increase happiness, mental and physical health and academic success. For every school that can afford to purchase a social-emotional learning curriculum, there are many more that cannot. We want to make it accessible and free so that all children can learn these essential life skills.
