Earth Day is celebrated worldwide every year on April 22. It is a day to express gratitude towards this beautiful planet we live on and an opportunity to teach our children to respect it. McHenry County has a variety of events to participate in during Earth Week. Some events are simply celebrating all of the gifts that this earth gives us and others are dedicating time to give back to our planet.

Bats use echolocation to hunt. Learn why bats are beneficial, how you can help them, and what species live here by detecting their sonar frequency on a 1.3-mile night hike. FREE. No registration required.
18 April, 10:00 a.m – Wee Wanderer Wednesdays
Crabtree Nature Center, Barrington
Join in a special program for little naturalists ages 2 – 6 with adult. If weather permits, time will be spend outdoors.
19 April, 8:00 a.m. – Bird Walks
Crabtree Nature center, Barrington
Join the Crabtree staff to look for spring migrant birds. Meet in the parking lot.
21 April, 11:00 a.m. Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth Storytime
Barnes & Noble, Crystal Lake

Catch, craft, climb. Special Earth Day family activities in the three-acre, nature play area.

18 April, All Day – Arbor Day Celebration
Pederson Preserve, Barrington
Pick up your Oak Tree sapling at Pederson Preserve (corner of Lake Cook and Hart Roads, across from Barrington High School) between the hours of 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. First come, first served basis.
21 April, 11:00 a.m. Earth Day Celebration
Prairieview Educational Center, Crystal Lake
The event is held both indoors and out. Puppet shows, guided hikes, musical entertainment, crafts, recycling drive, environmental exhibits and more. See the website for specific times and other details. This is a free special event and registration is not required. All ages are welcome. Children ages 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult family member.
22 April, 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Earth Day Gathering
Millennium Park, Fox Lake
There will be speakers from several local environmental organizations and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy at this event.
22 April, All day – Party for the Planet
Brookfield Zoo, 8400 W 31st St., Brookfield
Every day is Earth Day at Brookfield Zoo, but on this very special day we will be showcasing some of the steps you can commit to that will truly make a difference for animals across the globe! With special Zoo Chats and green activities and crafts, Party for the Planet will be filled with educational, engaging, and fun activities for the entire family!
Hands-on Earth Week Activities for Families
21 April 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Community Clean-up
Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce
Join the Crystal Lake Chamber and the Crystal Lake Park District as they clean-up what winter left behind. Meet at the chamber building to get your gloves & bags and after you’ve cleaned up your parks & neighborhoods, return for grilled hot dogs, sandwiches, chips and drinks.
24 April, 11:00 a.m. – Volunteer Earth Day Tree Planting
Angelic Organics Lodge, Caledonia, IL
Volunteer with us on Earth Day! You’ll help plant trees on the grounds of the new Angelic Organics Lodge. This family-friendly event is a celebration of new beginnings, and a great way to keep the earth healthy. Come dressed to get your hands dirty. Layers are strongly recommended. Tools for planting will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. Be sure to bring a snack and water bottle with you. This event is FREE, but a RSVP is appreciated.
27 April, Arbor Day Tree Giveaway

In celebration of Arbor Day on April 27th, The Village of Oakwood Hills is giving away Colorado Blue Spruce Tree seedlings. You may pick up your free seedling at the Village Hall during normal business hours…. Trees were donated to the Village for all to enjoy
