Weekly Events for Children with Special Needs:

Open Play
Every Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
GiGi’s Playhouse, 5404 W. Elm Street, McHenry | (815) 385-7529
Families and their friends are invited to the playhouse for playtime. Open play helps promote positive beginnings for new families with a child with Down syndrome, creates awareness opportunities for peers and friends, and provides support and networking for families. Come ready for fun and a crazy good time! Open to families with children of all ages and their friends.

Creative Connections
Mondays, 10:00 – 10:45 a.m.

Algonquin Area Public Library, 2600 Harnish Dr., Algonquin | (847) 458-6060
A storytime for children ages 0-5 to make connections with their caregivers, other children, and literacy. Run by a speech therapist from Elgin Pediatric Therapy, this group is designed for children currently receiving therapy services or those who may benefit from therapeutic play, yet children with all abilities are welcome.

Show me a Sign

Learn basic sign language for communication. All are welcome to attend.

AMC Sensory Friendly Films
January 12 & 26, 10:100 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
AMC Theatres in Lake in the Hills and South Barrington
AMC is proud to partner with the Autism Society to offer unique movie showings where we turn the lights up, and turn the sound down, so you can get up, dance, walk, shout or sing!

Kids Club
January 12,  10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

This program is designed to support the development of social skills and language through peer to peer interaction in a casual and fun setting! Kids Club supports gross motor skills through active games, fine motor and self- help skills through meal/snack preparation and activities. The Kids Club program is recommended for 8—12 year olds

Sensory Story Time (registration required)
January 12, 10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
Barrington Area Library, 505 N. Northwest Highway, Barrington | (847) 382-1300
Children of all ages can enjoy books, music, and movement designed to engage the senses and build language and literacy skills. For children of all abilities, registration required.

Sensory Storytime (registration required)
January 12,  1:30 – 2:15 p.m.
Crystal Lake Public Library 126 Paddock Street, Crystal Lake
This storytime, designed for children with special needs, features movement, music, stories, and hand-on activities. Siblings are welcome. Registration required.

Sensory Playtime (registration required)
January 14,  10:00 – 10:30 a.m.
Marengo-Union Library District, 19714 E. Grant Hwy, Marengo
This now permanent club was developed for young ones ages 2-4. Toddlers will have the opportunity to stimulate the senses with a variety of activities, which also enhance learning and encourage exploration. Please register in advance

LMNOP
January 26,  6:00 – 8:00 p.m

 LMNOP is an interactive and engaging program designed to guide parents and young children through learning basic sign language and other forms of communication using music and language based activities.  LMNOP is recommended for ages Newborn-36 months.
